A Loving Sister & Daughter

I am Victoria White. I am the 2nd oldest among the five siblings in my household and the 4th oldest among the nine siblings split in my very blended family. This has made me cherish and desire a big family myself. I believe everyone should have a sibling to argue with, argue for, and love unconditionally because I see the incredible effect it has had on my life. My siblings have shaped me in a powerful way. They have made me become a leader among us. I would force my mom to teach my how to do things so I could help around more. It was then when I learned to wash and fold my clothes, and when I got older, she taught me to cook (one of my now favorite things to do).
My mother raised me to be independent and wanted me to be the driver in the car that is my life. She instilled the importance of getting a higher education in me ever since I was in elementary school. I can remember her telling us that we were all going to college and that we weren’t going to settle for something when we could work for more. I would dream of my future as a leader in whatever I chose to do. I believe it was her faith in my success that pushed me and helped me become Valedictorian of my senior class.

A Student

As a child I was hungry for knowledge; I had to learn something new and interesting. I dove into books like Michael Phelps dives into Olympic pools. I was in my elementary school library frequently and the same would go in middle school. In my 8th grade year, my friends and I had an unofficial book club among us where we would read a chapter of the books we picked out and talk about them during class or lunch. Those books brought us together as friends and created some very lasting memories. Getting to library was much harder in high school, but nothing could stop me. I would go to the library when I could and read e-books when I couldn’t. I was reading every day; it was my life. Then I discovered the beauty and passion hidden within spoken word. When I discovered that, I was on YouTube watching teens and young adults pour their feelings and experiences out for the world to hear. It was mesmerizing. It lead to me reading more poetry from popular authors.

A Dancer

Reading and cooking were my two favorite activities, but they didn’t compare to being a dancer. Dancing kept me happy and revealed a side of me that I didn’t even know existed. I was a dancer throughout 2nd to 12th grade and it kept me in shape and introduced me to a group of wonderful girls and young ladies. Those friendships groomed me into a person who could step outside of their comfort zone and they taught me to never fear the unknown. However, I never really noticed the change until I was in high school. Being a dancer helped my self-confidence and taught me to truly love myself. I became a whole new (and improved) person. I was no longer the timid, shy girl I was before. I was so happy and threw myself into dance. It became the number one thing in my life (behind school of course). It showed me that once I’m fully committed to something, that I give my all to it.

A Hard Worker

Another thing that revealed my work ethic was being a leader in my school’s Interact Club. It was the club’s first year at the school, and as president I wanted to set the precedent. I was in my sponsor’s office everyday making phone calls, planning our monthly event, and getting things together for our upcoming meeting. It was a club that was solely ran by me; it created a sense of responsibility and pride that everything that happened was because of me. I would eat, sleep, and breathe Interact Club. This also revealed one of my weaknesses; not asking for help. I was always too independent, so I wouldn’t ask of anything from anyone even if the help would speed the process up. I believe in depending on oneself to get things done efficiently and correctly.
